This is a photo of someone who has used Maryland's solar tax credit.

With the world moving towards green and renewable energy, Maryland is one of the states that has been offering incentives for homeowners who choose to power their homes using solar panels. It’s a rebate program that offsets the cost of buying a solar system. Up to $1000 may be earned if you install a home solar system with a capacity of 1 - 20 kw.

There is also a tax benefit from the federal government. This benefit will no longer be available after 2021, so the time to take advantage of this offer is now! There is more about this credit below.

From reducing your electricity bills to being beneficial to the environment, solar panels can be a wonderful addition to your home. The maintenance costs are relatively low and solar is a truly renewable energy source - as long as the sun is shining, energy is being produced. There are 202 sunny days per year in Maryland on average - and each day is an opportunity to use the sun’s energy to power your home.

How the Solar Tax Credit Works

The federal tax credit is available to both residential and commercial properties. Homeowners are allowed to apply this credit to their income tax and if an owner moves into a newly purchased home that has solar panels installed, they are able to apply this credit as well.

The credit is 26 % for projects that begin construction in 2020 and 22% for projects that begin construction in 2021. After 2021, the residential credit will be zero, so you have until then to take advantage of this!

Why Solar?

There are many benefits to supplementing your home’s energy system with a solar system as well.

1. Cost

Across the country, energy costs rise every year. A solar system may offset them and save you money in the long run. Generally, solar systems are low maintenance and you won’t need costly repairs.

2. Versatility

Solar energy can be used to create both electricity and heat, making it a diverse choice for homeowners. It can also be stored in a battery, so while it does depend on the sun and the weather, the energy can be kept in reserve and used as needed. The technology of solar power is always evolving, for example, just recently windows that double as solar panels were introduced to the market.

3. Environment

Solar energy has no emissions, making it one of the most environmentally friendly sources of energy. If you install a solar system in your home, you are directly benefiting your local environment by lowering air pollution.
